Creating Assets
Uploading new assets is as easy as a few simple steps with OwnXR.
This page contains essential information about using the application.
Asset Creation in Five Steps
Launch Editor application
- Navigate to
/editorpage and click on the Create new button - Or directly navigate to
/editor/create
Drag & drop or click to browse and import files
- 3D model file(s)
- A single .glb file (recommended)
- A pair of .gltf and .bin files, possibly with texture files
- An .obj file, possibly with an .mtl file, also possibly with texture files
- Upcoming .usd/.usdz support
GLTF and OBJ formats with textures may require nested folder structures, which are not supported by some browse prompts. The OBJ file format is also known to have compatibility issues. It is recommended to export your 3D model as a GLB file using common 3D software or online conversion tools with discretion. Read more here .
- Environment map file (skybox)
- A single equirectangular image file in following formats
- .hdr file for high-dynamic range image and lighting (recommended)
- .png, .jpg or .jpeg file for visual background (studio lighting will be applied automatically)
Properly name your asset and add some tags
Good naming is key to using your assets effectively. Adding a couple of generic tags such as animated, plant, nature or anything you can quickly recognize is highly recommended for spending less time searching.
You can always change the name and tags of your assets and their versions. Same applies for all other settings. More on initial upload.
Fine tune the imported asset
- Zoom and rotate around using the canvas
- Utilize toolbar buttons and keyboard shortcuts
- Dive into panels on the right such as Asset Info and Environment
- For 3D models
- Switch to customization mode to access advanced 3D material editing capabilities such as colors, metallic workflow, transparency, and more
- Check polygon count and bounding dimensions
- Click and show gizmos to move, rotate and scale the asset by hand or use Transformation panel for precision
- Use Environment panel to
- Change the tint of color and level of brightness of the image (all formats)
- Set texture size and blur amount to find the most suitable file size and visual precision of the background
- Provide background and lighting for 3D models only for thumbnail and preview
All of these settings are also availabile in OXR scene composer application, where you can change everything element by element, copy and paste. Therefore, try to avoid uploading the same asset multiple times. If you have a certain configuration (such as different scales or sets of colors of a product) create and reuse asset versions. You can always come back and modify them.
All set!
- Click the CREATE button on the side of the toolbar and wait a few moments for the upload modal. Keep the tab open for incoming messages.
- That's all! Your assets are ready to import from asset libraries or be managed at
/editor.
Important Notes
Assets and textures are automatically optimized and encrypted before any asset data saved is to our resources. OwnXR does not store or copy any uploaded file. You may want to keep the files creating assets.
3D models are uploaded as you last see them. All transformations made on the model and the selected set of animations will be used to generate the asset data. This will be the first version of your asset. For 3D models, this version will have a transformation of zero and scaling of one.
Most 3D assets are high in size. Based on recent use and various sources of files, OwnXR may save more than 50% on average* when optimizing the assets. That the file size and saved amount is highly dependent on texture sizes, complexity in geometry (polygon size), animation groups and their content, as well as pre-applied processes.
You are all set to jump at /editor/create and create your first asset!
